Craig, Darren, et al...
Perhaps I'm wrong in this, but I'm detecting a hint of
hostility with regards to the discussion that sprang
up from the "CC" discussion. I understand where Craig
is coming from in his love for the Mac. However, from
a technical standpoint, Darren is most indeed correct;
from its inception, the PC was meant to be an
open-architecture device, ergo customizable. Does this
make one better than the other? That depends on the
person. For me, the true measure of an item is in the
quality of its construction. I own a number of 68k
Macs, and I have to say that they are some of the
finest machines made; just a look at the simplicity of
an SE logicboard in comparison to an equal vintage PC
board shows the amount of thought that went into it.
The only PC of similar vintage that came close or
surpassed were the IBM PS/2 series, namely the PS/2
Model 50Z (sadly, the entire series was doomed due to
IBM's refusal to license MCA... but I digress).
I like, and have used and still am using in fact, many
different computer systems. For instance, my Macs are
used mainly for my writing and graphics. However, I
also use Wintel machines; this is being written on
one. My primary astronomy computer is an old Toshiba
586/120 Satellite laptop running Windows 98SE, and it
is more than capable of doing what I need (I'm not a
big fan of the full, immersive planetarium programs. I
prefer my astronomy programs to be lean and quick. And
besides, I work in a planetarium. Again, I
digress...). On the other hand, I have a modifed Mac
QuikCam BW that I use for basic imaging, attached to
any number of Macs, including my Classic II, which is
akin to the thrill of watching paint dry. Most of my
video astronomy is preprocessed on an old Centris
660AV and ocassionally my old Plus gets into the fray
as my main clock for my observations! On top of that,
let's not go into the Tandy Model 102 I use for quick,
in the field note taking, the two Palm's I use all the
time or my OmniGo that is my pocket terminal/keyboard
for one of the Palms! I even have an original IBM PC
board that just-will-not-die! What I'm trying to say
is that "to each his/her own"; we use what we use
because we want to.
I could go on, and in fact have go on too long. But I
don't believe this is the place for such. Nor is this
the place for hostility.

Rob
