Perhaps I'm wrong in this, but I'm detecting a hint of
hostility with regards to the discussion that sprang
up from the "CC" discussion.

Nah, there's no agro here.

As its a mac list there must be some wintel bashing.

We are not all mac users, I for one would not be described as anything more than a hobbyist. With that in mind a paragraph such as:

In fact, I think that is what makes out machines, in the end, better than the PCs; our ability to bastar...uh, customize them(!) and upgrade them. Ever seen a x86 or Pentium I machine (especially a laptop!) still able to be an effective tool for today's computer world?

is both wrong and rather insulting. My reply was perhaps a little rough, the words were used to convey my disgust as I can not explain on this list just how useful and modular these old door stops can be. This can also be just as hard to sell to post P1 pc users.

As these machines lack any of the grace of a compact mac there is no surprise that folks will throw them away once they upgrade.

The term "upgrade" in the quote appears to refer to swapping mobo's, a 386 board can be replaced with a P2 board as long as AT and ATX case standards a taken into account with a quick look at the power supply and connecting plug. That alone is some what better than sliding one 68k board out to replace it with another.

A real upgrade to a compact requires far more work, a little art and a lot of skill. One of the hardest mods to do well. I dont have access to the upgrade boards which I enviously read about here so they are not included.

Craig, we dont need more lurkers here, we need posters. Mistakes are common, both from the sender and in the reading. A mistake that generates discussion is not that much of a mistake at all.
I dont believe in using list members addresses for off list critism, to offer help or a apology is the only way we should use our fellow members addresses.

Sorry; and I WILL REMAIN a quiet list reader from now on, as I have been for the past year

Not acceptable. ;)
I posed you a challenge regarding "a effective tool".
http://networking.earthweb.com/netos/print.php/1107911
is one of many examples of what a 386 and a floppy drive can do minus a hdd, fan, (keyboard or monitor after setup).

cheers
