I'd bet that the card is broken. By my experience with PC Ethernet cards (the network protocol works the same way in PCs and Macs, of course), if the hub doesn't detect the card, it's a hardware problem. If the hardware were working properly, both the hub's and the card's 'link' lights should be lit up, no matter the software is correctly configured or not. I'd try to get a crossover cable and see if that works. If it works, you can blame the hub (go and get a new one, just making sure it's 10 base-T). If it doesn't work, it will proof that the card is broken (go and get a new card ;-) ).
