Think we may be making some progress here guys.
I went to install the driver from the link Darren sent me and I get a message saying that the item "network" cannot be deleted, move the file to another folder and try running the installer again. then
I check the System folder where (I think) the Asante installer is trying to move "Network" file, and of course there's no file there that I see named network. So I try running the installer again, only this time after booting up with all the extensions turned off - hoping this will maybe solve the problem - no dice. Thinking I can outsmart the computer, I tried moving the "Network" file from the Asante installer to the System folder to install that way. Now I get a message saying "the command could not be completed because an invisible item with the same name already exists in this location."
So my questions now, why would there be an invisible file already in the Extensions folder called "network?" why is it invisible, do I really need it (if it's causing me not to be able to install the correct drivers for the Asante ethernet card), how can I delete it if I don't?
When installing its wise to boot with extensions off by holding the shift key down during bootup. This moves extensions and control panels into their disabled folder or makes them inactive so they can be overwriten.
Networks on macs have a couple of hidden files that can cause problems you can also add conflicting resources (I try not to use this term) which can cause fiddly problems.
At a guess I suggest that the network control panel which maybe found in the system/control panel folder is the cause of your problem.
Remove it, boot with extensions off or disable "all" network items in your extensions manager.
On later macs a "install set" for the extensions manger is a good practise as you can see the items that where installed before overwriting what you have already. This allows for better understanding of both the mac and the program and aids in bug fixing and extension conflict resolution.
Good luck
