You'll also need a system disk. You can not read or write 400 or 800 Kb disks with an external floppy drive. You need to have a Macintosh with a built-in floppy drive. Furthermore, MacOS X is not able to write 400 Kb (single-sided) floppies even when the hardware would support them. The only way to go is having an 'intermediate' Macintosh with a 1.44 SuperDrive (an SE/30 or a Classic I/II will do the trick and is small and cute). But you can allways take a 720/800 Kb disk and format it as one sided. If your System version supports them, that is - I'm not completely sure, but I think one-side format support was removed somewhere between System 7.6 and System 8.
