Hey gang... It's round two in trying to get this Color Classic to do the
network gig... I just received another Asante Ethernet (MCiLC rev A) card
today with the same exact results (detailed a little later for those that
aren't familiar with the post) ...
I'm trying to get the little computer on my network at the house ... It's a
"for fun" machine in reality, but it would be ever-so-nice to be able to get
on the internet with it, or at least be able to share files between it and
my other computers.
I'm on my second Asante PDS card (first being an MCLC rev A, now I'm on an
MCiLC rev A.) and I haven't been able to get either to recognize my network.
I'm no guru when it comes to networking stuff, and the most of my knowledge
comes from Mac OS 8.6 and up, compounded with this being my first "compact"
ie, no "built-in" ethernet goodness :). So needless to say, I've been trying
to tackle this one with all thumbs.
Here's the setup I've got at the house.
Cable Modem > Belkin Wireless Router w/ 4 port 10/100 switch > D-Link
10baseT 5-port hub (read somewhere that the older cards didn't like newer
switches ... So I picked an old one up for $5 and gave it a shot) > Color
Classic.
And of course I've got some other machines in there too - one additional Mac
at the moment, an iBook 600 Dual USB running X.3.
I pulled the PRAM battery to reset the board as was suggested in an earlier
post, I've got a clean install of 7.5.3 ("all Macs" version to hopefully
include all necessary drivers - yes, Apple CS, LC, and NB Ethernet files are
all present and accounted for in my extensions folder :), 2G HD, Motherboard
from a 575 LC, full 68040 CPU overclocked to 40Mhz, 132Mb RAM, 1Mb VRAM,
640x480 screen mod ... Everything seems to work great on the CC, with the
exception of the Ethernet card.
I've tried setting MacTCP to both Ethertalk, and Ethernet (not really
worrying about IP settings just yet, as I want to get the two devices _CC
and hub_ to "see" each other first); the Network control panel is set to
EtherTalk
I've tried running the card both with and without the Asante Drivers (heard
that the stock Apple drivers in System 7 should work), tried a multitude of
cables that are known to be "good" cables, tried bypassing the hub -
directly to the router; directly to the Cable modem; directy to the iBook
... All with the same result - the green LED on the ethernet card lights up,
indicating that it knows that something has been connected, but no lights on
the hub/router to show that it "sees" the color classic and never any
activity from the other LED (which I'm assuming is a network activity
indicator). I ran the troubleshooter than comes packaged in the Asante
Driver installer, results being:
(slot E checked, all tests ran)
Memory Test Passed
NIC Transmissions Failed. Excessive collisions.
Loopback 3 Test Failed
NIC Transmission Failed.
Collecting ethernet Packets, followed by a list of tests, with the result
being "0" for all.
Hmmm... What else... Had a pizza for dinner and listened to Weezer for a
bit... Would this have any impact?
I guess more than anything I was wondering if anybody has had similar
problems with their setup, or if anyone knew of any such problems with this
hardware combination and what the suitable workaround would be?
Any chance I got a motherboard with a bum PDS slot? If so, how would I be
able to test it?
Am I missing anything?
Thanks a ton!
Chris
