Hey gang,
In my recent "quest to find the Internet" with my Mystic I began to wonder what the advantages are with using a PDS ethernet card as opposed to a comm slot ethernet card? I was forwarded an interesting link (that I must have missed in my earlier searches at jag's) with some information suggesting that originally, CCs and LCs only had a PDS slot, and that with the addition of the Comm slot, a software workaround was needed (just for 7.5?) to make the computer default to the PDS slot for ethernet (at least that was my understanding of the article). Anyway, here's the link so you can interpret for yourselves.

So what's the most common weapon of choice? Why?
When we thought a slow down problem on some 5200s was possibly due to the type of network cards we switched a number of them from CS to PDS just by switching cards and then changing the AT/IP control panels. No software workarounds needed. I don't recall the OS, it was probably either 7.6.1 or 9.1.
If you don't plan on using a CS modem then there isn't much reason either way. While there are a few PDS cards out there other than Ethernet, they are rare and it's unlikely you would be using one. I would base my choice on what was available.
Okay, I looked at the web page. It's not a software workaround, "LC PDS Ethernet" is the driver for LC style PDS cards. I don't think it was new to 7.5.3. It varies somewhat on the OS installer but normally I think it would install all Ethernet drivers that could be used on the machine it's being installed on if a normal install is selected. It's possible that the driver was removed or the System was built on another machine or a custom install was done.
The LC PDS started surprisingly with the LC. IIRC the Comm Slot was started on the slide out logic board models but I don't know which model had it first.
