The PC was dropped on its face into a pile in a driveway by a "helper"
called "Bear". 

Meh. 

As the carved-out sector was at the end of the drive I ran fdisk to "shave"
the drive's size down past the scratch. 6 gigs became 4.5.

Most great Mac formatting programs offer that same option. Workable only IF
the damage is at the end or sometimes near the middle of the drive.
