There are only a few browsers that will work with a 68000-based machine like the SE. A
quick rundown:

0) Install a hard drive first.
1) MacWWW (aka "Samba"): Only browser that works under system 6; the rest require
system 7. Buggy, slow, text-only, no ftp. Only for the curious.
2) MacWeb, versions 1 and 2: Version 1.00A3.2 is relatively fast (emphasis on
"relatively"; nothing is fast on the SE), but doesn't interpret modern html, so page
layouts are goofy. Version 2.0 interprets more, but that makes it *incredibly* slow.
I'm too impatient to use 2.0 on 68000 machines. Won't normally display images inline
(but a little work can enable viewing gifs -- not jpegs -- inline). Can always download
images for subsequent viewing with a separate program.
3) NCSA Mosaic, version 1.03: buggy, slow. Will display some images inline, albeit at
poor resolution.

All of these implement an older version of the http protocol, so can't access many
websites. For those, you can use MacLynx. It's not quite a browser, but it will allow
you to access modern websites. You can't view any images, but you can download them for
later viewing.

Also, the browsers are so old that they naturally don't have (valid) security
certificates. Sites that demand certs will refuse access.

But hey, just to get a browser up and running on an SE is thrilling enough, if you're a
"trailing edge" kind of guy! I still surf on my Mac Plus from time to time, just
because...

Btw, to download these browsers, see home.earthlink.net/~gamba2, and click on the link
to browsers.
For a nice complete "surf the web on your old mac" kit, see www.jagshouse.com (scroll
down; you'll see the link).
