I've used those kind of adapters for years and they work fine. They even have a connection to run the analog audio out to your sound input.
Then you would need a IDE-narrow SE scsi adapter. I got an Acard one years back, and I love it.
This is the narrow SE adapter I have: http://www.acard.com/eng/product/scside/aec-7720u.html
This is the page with all of the adapters: http://www.acard.com/eng/menu/scside_hot.html
Unfortunately the adapters run about $80.
Another option would be to just get a scsi external laptop cd-rom.
I have several of the Renos, but they suck. They are only 4x and they don't read CD-Rs.

The model I've been looking at as a replacement is the Panasonic one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80198&item=6708302775&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
The Panasonic specs don't list it as being compatible with CD-R, but I've heard that people have had success with them on those drives.
