According to the manual there were three kind of cartridges for this 
keyboard: a memory module, a fix modle and a combi module. They were 
used to store information about the way keys were programmed. (It is a 
programmable keyboard).

What's the blocky little thingie on the upper part?

Some memory module or electronic device. Don't really know yet.
