You probably have later model cards that understand the negotiation mechanism. 
This problem hit me with two SparcStation 10's, the SS10's have an onboard 
10BaseT nic from AMD, one worked fine with a linksys switch, the other 
refused. putting a hub between them solved the whole thing.

If you have a Mac nic that doesn't have the problem consider yourself lucky, 
but keep in mind that if you collect other older hardware, this problem isn't 
limited to asente nic's for Mac's
