Yes. Hook it up and program your basic to send out "ATDT 555 12122 (return)". Or put it into a loop continuously sending out sequential digits. Take the cover off the modem, beg borrow or steal an oscilloscope, and learn to look at what goes on inside the modem at the serial port. You probably won't fry the modem but you can't hurt the Mac.
