Obviously, the choice was an 020 or 030. but I was wondering if anyone has done a router on a compact.

Possible but not recommended. Assuming you are talking about a broadband connection you'll need two Ethernet interfaces. You can do it with one but it is strongly recommended against. It will have to be a SE/30. But the only way to get two NICs is to use a PDS card and a SCSI-Ethernet interface.

If you use the pass-through PDS capability with a PDS right angle adapter and some clever adaptation of the ethernet back panel (or are willing to case-mod) you can get two PDS ethernet adapters in one SE/30. I have done this, and Asante made it pretty easy since you can manually set the adderss of each card with jumpers.

I also have a dual ethernet, accelerated (thanks to a twin PDS adapter from a IIsi) SE/30 assembled that I need to test - I had to give up the internal hard drive bay for the accelerator to fit, but it all does fit.

Long live the SE/30!
