Just a couple of comments but no real answers. I am still using an SE/30 as a file server with a mix of Wintel, Linux, and much newer Macs

Email may be a bit of a problem with system 7. With Unicode and HTML so prevalent it's hard to find "proper" software for OS 7. If he treats HTML email as spam - I do - he'll be OK. >I've got a DSL modem (Westell model) hooked up to a LinkSys Router/Switch. System 7.5.1 is fine on any SE/30. >Now I'm at the point where the SE/30 is hooked up to the router/Switch but >nothing is getting seen on either end. The SE/30 is not grabbing an IP. That bothers me and I set such things up with a mask of 255.255.252.0. But then the subnet mask may be ignored anyway. Setting a subnet mask on system 7 can be done but it initially offers only class B 255.255.0.0 and class C 255.255.255.0. The SE/30 will not use MacTCP until some application accesses it. You should not expect the Linksys to see it until an internet access is requested. I was never able to get DHCP to work on system 7 and I reverted to manually setting my local IPs. The option is even called "Get IP from server" rather than "Use DHCP" which may mean that the code may predate the current standard. >Needless to say, pinging the address I think the SE/30 should have >(192.168.1.101) from the PC does not offer a response. There is some old software from Stairways called NetPresenz which I use on the SE/30 as an ftp server. It also can be used to set up telnet, ping, and the like. It's great for debugging network problems. It used to be $10 shareware. <http://www.interarchy.com> is a current pointer to those folks. There is also Versaterm Link from Synergy Software which is no longer supported. You will not be able to share SE/30 files using IP. AppleTalk over ethernet is pretty much the only option and that will not ask the Lynksys for an IP address. Others have reported problems with SE/30s connected to 10/100 base T hubs and switches. I still have a chunk of RG-8 co-ax in my ethernet so it's all 10 MHz and I have no such problems. -- --> There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary, and those who don't <-- -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
