Can't help directly, but I'm eager to see how this one turns out. There is
a similar problem with original MacWrite files up through v.4; support for
them was dropped somewhere along the upgrade path, so that they have to be
opened and saved again in a later format, e.g. MacWrite II, to make them
readable for more modern applications. Your problem is getting past the
point where Claris Translators can take over for you. Maybe you'll have to
do a two-step recovery process, but first try the following:

Once you're in AppleWorks 6, everything's fine. AppleWorks 6 can save in
formats as early as ClarisWorks 4, so it should be able to read them, too.
ClarisWorks 5 is most amazing as it can do almost everything, saving files
even as MacWrite 5.0, AppleWorks 2 or ClarisWorks 1.0! ClarisWorks 4 and 3
go back as far as 5 does, not further; so your best bet, I think, is to try
laying hands on a copy of ClarisWorks 4 or 5 (which is a wonderful
application with a small footprint for what it's doing), open the CW 2
files with it and save them again as the respective newer version. You may
be lucky opening them directly with AppleWorks 6 under OS X which would you
save from doing a second opening/saving chore. If you have problems finding
the software, I bet there are some kind souls in the UK or across the
Channel that can help you out ;-)

Have fun, OM
