Why do you enjoy your compact Macs? With all of the technology on the
market these days, what is the appeal? My Classic II runs OS 7, an OS that
I find very appealing and efficient. It's almost as portable as a laptop,

is dedicated to very basic functions (running Word) that meets my needs
quite well. It also has a history, since it was used years ago by a friend
of mine who has since moved to another part of the country.

What's your story?

I remember when Macs came out in 1984. My father worked for IBM at the time (he worked there for nearly 30 years) and wouldn't hear of it when I asked for one. So I got a PCjr instead.

In college I got a Mac 512Ke (my first Mac), then sold it for a NeXT Cube, which I still own. Around 3-4 years ago, I got back into the Mac family with the purchase of a G4 Cube (which I have since sold to buy a Sunflower iMac) and OS X. Back at the 10.1 level, you could still see much of the NeXT influence.

After I got the G4 Cube, I developed an interest in the history of Mac OS and began collecting Macs, mostly Compacts. I have a Plus (with a 128 keyboard) - I just love that form factor. I have an SE, an SE/30, and several other systems. (See my collection here if you want: http://homepage.mac.com/unixdude/computers/.)

I like the Compacts, especially the Plus, because they are what started this GUI revolution. I marvel at what Apple was able to do with an OS that fits on an 800k floppy -- with room to spare!

I don't do as much with my Compacts as I used to (they're all in the closet at the moment) but I'm not ready to give them up yet. They're just so cool!
