Are you running AppleTalk bridge on the G3 to do that, or are your Compacts ethernetted?
I have Alexey Danilchenko's 'Taco', which is a beige G3 in a Colour Classic. I had the 'Taco' idea, but never got it to work. Alexey put it on eBay, and I grabbed it:
