To chime in on the 68pin SCSI adapters/drives issue:

The 68-to-50pin adapters work fairly well in external SCSI boxes ...IF the
adapter + drive fits in the box. (There are some smaller inline adapters, and
some shorter right angle adapters.) That's only partly the problem with use of
those as internal drives in compacts.

For the compacts, another problem is termination ...a lot of the later SCSI2
drives (typically, these will be 68pin ...and 80pin SCA drives aren't
terminated
btw ...the SCA adapter boards are quite a bit more complex then the simpler
68-to-50s, and include provisions for termination), terminate with voltages
that
aren't compatible - or some kind of voltage levels issue can just be a "who
knows?" one to anyone but an engineer - and they won't work internally UNLESS
you ALSO use a passive terminator.

I haven't come across a "known working" 50pin drive that didn't work internally
though.

There are two basic type of these adapters. The "easiest" to find
have the connectors at either end of a small circuit board making
the length of the adapter about two inches long. Works fine if used
in something like a 6100. In other machines the extra length may
interfere with proper installation of the drive.

The better kind of adapter has the connectors on either side of
a vertically aligned circuit board making the board fit close to
the back of the drive. This type only adds about 1/2 inch to the
length of the drive. Personally, I have only been able to find this
type of adapter for the 80 pin drives.
