I've had trouble formating ex-Compaq hard drives. In my case these were Seagate ST15150W, but I think they have the firmware modified in some way. I found that if I used a PCI SCSI card (BusLogic or Adaptek) in a PC :-P then I could re-format the drive, leaving it clean. I then used FWB hard disk toolkit to create Mac partitions.

This could be one way a PC is better than a Mac :-) The best bit being you don't even have to boot as far as Windows!
