I've never seen the speaker wire break. Many times bad/no sound is the first symptom of capacitor leakage. Before you know it, when you try to turn it on, you will get vertical bars or a large checkerboard pattern instead of the happy mac. Often you can get it going by fiddling with the on/off switch. Eventually it may become so bad that you cannot boot at all. At this point, I recommend removing the logic board, the SIMMs and the battery, and washing the logic board in a dishwasher (no dry cycle) then air dry for a couple of days. On reassembly you are likely to get a Classic II that boots every time but produces no sound at all. A permanent fix would involve replacing the leaking capacitors on the logic board. This has been done successfully on the SE/30 which has similar problems. -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
