It's badged as a 512k on the back? Then somebody has put a 128k bezel onto a 512k bucket. NOT a normal upgrade procedure. Probably salvaging the best of two old Macs. Or the badges were swapped out after a 512k upgrade -- not sure if this was part of the OEM procedure or not, or a user custom modification. It is definitely stock whether 128k or 512k chassis with that 400k drive. You should crack it open and see what you find inside, since you'll have to anyway to remove the disk drive and repair it. Pretty sure it can be. Check the following sites: http://macfaq.org has some floppy disk related topics and http://home.earthlink.net/%7Egamba2/schematics.html for Dr. Lee's excellent repair documents. Perhaps something in there will also explain the happy Mac since that just can't happen if it doesn't find a system. I can't begin to guess what kind of signal is being shorted to return a found system to the CPU. You might check the ROMS while you are in there, that they are the correct ones and are properly seated along with the CPU. The other symptoms sound like routine analogue board failures and I will look them up when I get a chance. Too late today. Perhaps another lister will beat me too it and have a better explanation for the the happy Mac without a System disk.
