I have taken to using a fairly large - 5 inch - pair of wire cutters to snip 
the top half from a soldered-in aluminum capacitor. That allows you to pick at 
the internals until a circular plastic insert becomes visible. A little more 
picking and you can separate the base into two parts, one for each pin of the 
original capacitor. At that point it's simple to heat one pad at a time and use 
a pair of forceps to pick up the wires.

Clean up remaining solder with commercial "solder-wick" or use a piece of 
shielding braid dipped in an alcohol / rosin mixture.

My preference then is to replace with tantalum electrolytics.  The 47uF at 16v 
is not critical. Most are on the 5 volt power and can be replaced with 6 volt 
capacitors. The ones on the +12 volt line can be smaller than 47µF.
