I had to be back up at the school to hand out videos I
had produced for the marching band, and needed a
banner. As much as I love my new LaserJet 1022, it
doesn't make banners well. So I pulled out my Mac SE
and looked at my four ImageWriter IIs. I hadn't tested
the two I got from the school so I decided to hook one
up, thinking they were ImageWriters and nothing could
be wrong.

ImageWriter number one got outfitted with paper and a
brand new ribbon. I hit the power on button and the
light came on, but promptly went out and the printer
died. I checked the power cables and everything and
the printer just appeared dead. Is this a faulty power
supply?

ImageWriter number two, my other new one, seemed too
narrow for the paper that fit fine in the first one.
The ink also seemed to be acting up, as it wasn't
evenly distributed. Furthermore the feed seemed pretty
bad. This one had a manufacure date earlier than the
first one I tried.

So I went to "old reliable", an ImageWriter II from
1985 when they first came out. It did the job just
fine despite being in storage for two years.

Now for the biggest surprise. Only one person
commented on the banner. It was a 15 year old girl who
looked at it and said "Wow...that's the paper you have
to pull the scraps off of! I remember that from
elementary school!" I told her it was from a dot
matrix printer. She said "Wow...I remember those!"

I mention this because it's not every day someone that
young recalls using ImageWriter type printers.
