Martin - yes I did update immediately after 11.10 with no result. BUT have just got a bunch of updates thru the standard update channel and AFAIK this bug seems squashed. Have been working continually and rebooted a couple of times without a single launcher misbehaviour. Gratifying side-effect is that Compiz key bindings are now instant and stable.
