@Kenneth: when you say "gnome-shell and compiz", do you really mean gnome-shell or do you mean gnome-classic (i.e gnome-panel), they are different session, gnome-shell is not using compiz (and not sure it can work with it since some of their feature are integrated in their windows manager)
