@Daniel: Could be that it was running without plugins but trying your XDamageReport2 compiz branch did actually show a super-improvement with a vdpau HD channel running in VLC, frames looked smooth opposed to current stock window manager. (Half cpu for vlc, compiz cpu usage to 0). I couldn't test more because without decorator it was really hard to use without the window decorator (too lazy to build everything), but if you can merge it soon and fire some early testing package I am eager to try it out better
