Temporary workaround (needs compizconfig-settings-manager): Open CompizConfig and click the Window Decoration button. `Shadow windows' should be `any'. Replace it with `any & !(state=maxvert)'. This solved the problem for me. (I'm using Debian squeeze 6.0.6, but this should still work for Ubuntu.)
