Advanced bridge players will explicitly place hypothetical cards in their opponents' hands and plan their play. It's an effective strategy to to pull out a few more percentage points of making their desired contract. Sometimes it's the only (improbable) way to make a hand, or the (improbable) way for a plan to go bad. There are important decisions to make when selecting sample holdings to evaluate.
