You might have seen it in (Coulom, 2007), and earlier in (Stern, 2006).
Recently, I mentioned it in my "State of art in Computer Go 2009"
presentation.
I'm calling this "the gridcular metric", both in my sources and in a
paper I have submitted recently; anyone else is welcome to call it that
too. I don't think it has any other name attached to it so far.
Most programs relying on gamma-pattern combinations are probably using
this; at least Pachi is for sure, CrazyStone and others apparently too.
