English is so hard because it takes its words and grammar from so many other
languages (Greek, Latin, German, French ...), so every rule of grammar or
spelling or conjugating verbs that seems to be right is then not right at
another time. It can easily seem that there are more exceptions than rules. It
has been said that English is the "party girl" of languages. But Japanese is
probably harder to learn to read.

However, I am quite impressed that overall we are all able to do a good job of
understanding each other and share complex ideas and algorithms with each
other. Many thanks to all of the folks posting for whom English is not their
primary language ... you are making my life far easier (and letting me be the
lazy one who does not have to learn your language!).

Cheers,
David
