Successful human players will time their buzzer pressing to the cadence of Alex's voice--something Watson cannot do (it does not hear Alex speaking).
There seems to be some debate as to who has the advantage is buzzer pressing: http://www.kurzweilai.net/the-buzzer-factor-did-watson-have-an-unfair-advantage I would have liked to see Watson, Ken, and Brad each answer all of the questions and their scores be based on how quickly they answered, how many were correct and the difficulty of the clue. The buzzer nonsense is designed to make it entertaining but only serves to skew the results away from the language processing and trivia knowledge skills.
