Right click the desktop, hit the settings tab, when in the settingsd tab, there is a slider at the bottom, after you slide it, hit 'Apply' , test the resolutions to find the best one for ya...
Your graphics card doesn't support the maximum resolution for that monitor, thats the only issue. I run a dual monitor set up with them at 1280 by 1024, I have a pretty high end graphics card though. Another thing about the desktop tiling like that, while in the 'desktop' tab, click 'stretch'' next to the picture on you desktop, should solve that one. I like to brag about my monitors...
