Make sure you install the driver CD for the monitor, it contains a file that tells Windows what's the maximum resolution of your screen. It's probably 1680x1050. By default, Windows XP doesn't show widescreen resolutions, you probably chose 1600x1200 which is full screen and is out of range, thus a blank screen.
