Stop making this harder then it needs to be....

Your modem and router have default IP addresses, they could be either
of the following
Modem IP -
192.168.1.1
192.168.100.1
192.168.0.1

Router IP -
192.168.1.1
192.168.100.1
192.168.0.1

If you find that your modem and router are the same IP then change the
router, if you cannot find out how to do this but you can get into the
router then change the last digit of the routers IP address to
something in the 200's
like 253
so 192.168.x.253

if that works and you get a valid IP address that looks close to the
same on your computer then it should work.  Remy was right about
checking the cables, and to make sure they are in the correct slots.
First cable from modem ethernet to the router WAN/Internet port
Plug your computer into ethernet port 2, just for safe reasoning.
