We are thinking about replacing it but its very hard to find a gigabit
router that is wired nowadays.
They all seems to go wireless and that is not an option for the
moment.

That being said, I just updated the firmware of the router. Still no
progress what so ever.

What I have not yet mentioned is: when sending a ping to the modem
when it is connected to the router,
I type in "ping 192.168.1.1"   I get the following message:
"Response from 192.168.2.1 (being the router): Target host
unreachable"

Thats not right if you ask me... Any ideas?
