My pc is homemade - built in 2000 but a little more than a year ago my
computer man installed a new motherboard so nothing in my computer
should really be a problem. The whole year long I was blamiing my
speakers for this irritating noise until recently I realized that it
was only happening with dvd's so I did install new codecs - TWICE! I
think the first download may not have been up to date but nevertheless
neither download worked. I uninstalled the driver you said, rebooted
my computer and sure enough a new and improved driver did install
[Ultra DMA Mode 2] and now the sound is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
