Not only can this problem be caused by a bad CD it is also caused by a
bad drive.
Have you tried putting the drive (after removing from the USB
enclosure) directly onto your IDE bus?
If it works there then your enclosure has a problem. But if it still
fails writing then it is most likely the drive has failed.
Also when you tried buring did you have the verify option on?
