My XP Pro desktop won't finish hibernating. It displays the "Preparing to hibernate" screen, then the VGA screen saying "Hibernating ..." and showing a progress bar. The bar slowly fills up to the right and then ... Nothing. Progress appears to be complete but it continue to display "Hibernating ..." with the full progress bar until I power it off with the Power button.
I've tried: 1. Rebooting 2. Rebooting in the safe mode, then normally 3. Booting to the last known good configuration 4. Disabling hibernation (to delete hiberfil.sys), rebooting, re- enabling it. 5. Running a full scan with Windows Defender 6. Ditto with Avast Antivirus 7. Checking disk for errors 8. Defragging with hiberfil.sys gone Then I tried using System Restore. Whichever restore point I choose I get a message saying that changes to drive W: will not be restored since it was removed or not included in the last system backup. (I have an X: , Y: and Z: drive but have never had a W: drive.) After seeming to restore the system and rebooting I get a System Restore window saying that the system couldn't be restored to [name of restore point] and no changes were made. It happens with any restore point I pick. To solve the restore problem I've tried restoring from Safe Mode and turning off Avast's "self defense" module before attempting to restore. No luck. I should add that I have 25 GB free on my C: drive and I haven't made any changes to BIOS or installed new hardware or software since the last time I was able to hibernate. I'd welcome any suggestions. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Computer Tech Support" group.
