I use Open DNS too, and I highly recommend it. Almost always, if you can't access a website, it's usually not the website that is down. Mainstream websites have excellent uptime and stability reputations and expect their IT staff to keep their websites up over 99% of the time.
IT DOES happen that websites go down though.
