My sympathies! I've been in that position myself. It is annoying. The virus I had stemmed from my purchase of a "Magic Jack" phone, from Radio Shack; a place I didn't suspect I would pick up a virus. However, when I downloaded the Magic Jack software, my computer started acting funny, and it got worse with time. Because I had clicked the mouse and enabled all the downloads--including the virus-- I not only gave it permission to be on my machine, I gave it permission to disable my security system. Those people are so ingenious that they've invented a virus that I could not erase. I tried to recover and that had also been disabled by the virus. I called Symantec and gave them remote access to my computer, and they couldn't even get it off my disc! They recommended re-formating the disc and re-installing my operating system. It cost me $100!! They also gave me a Killer antivirus program. I have 90 days worth of free trial and then if I want to keep it I have to renew it. I feel that I now have the kind of protection that I need, and I think I'm going to fork out the money. Preventing the virus seems to be cheaper and easier than paying to have it removed and losing files because my recover program was disabled.
So that's my experience. I suggest that you try to to recover, and if that doesn't work, there's not much you can do that will not cost money! Good luck! My sympathies.
