I presume that you have the user manual that came with it. What does
it say? I doubt that very many of us have either lots of experience
with this printer, nor have the manual for it (myself, I do not have
the time to search for it on the net).
As to why you need the top cover open...
Perhaps the switch is bad (and is working opposite to what it should
(off when should be on, on when should be off)).
