I recently bought a used Promise EIDEMAX ISA card to support a 3 GB hard disk in my old 486DX-33 computer. I did not receive a User's Manual, so I am having to guess how to make it work. So far, I have discovered that if I set the CMOS hard drive info as "Not Installed" (aka Type 0), or as Type 1, the EIDEMAX will recognize and use the full capacity of the hard disk. If I set the CMOS hard drive info as User Defined Type 47, 6296 cylinders x 16 heads x 63 sectors (the true CHS parameters of the disk), the EIDEMAX will use only the first 1024 cylinders, and thus be limited to 504 MB, just like the motherboard BIOS.
Can anyone tell me what are the "optimum" jumper settings for the EIDEMAX card, and whether there are better ways to set the hard drive CMOS settings? Currently, the IRQ jumper is set for IRQ 15. Should it be IRQ 14? The Secondary/Primary jumper is set for Secondary. Should it be Primary? I have found a description of the jumper settings (at STASON.ORG), but the STASON site gives no info on how the jumper settings should be set. I'm hoping that someone has used this card in the past, and can recall the proper way to set it up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Computer Tech Support" group.
