DOS6.22 FDISK WILL recognize the large disk. When set as type 0 ("not
installed") or type 1 in CMOS, the EIDEMAX detects CHS=6296,16,63, and
translates it to 787,128,63. FDISK then recognizes the full 3095 MB
of the disk, and I can partition and format it however I please,
except that no logical drive can be larger than 2 GB. Currently, the
disk is partitioned as 6 drives (one primary partition and five
logical drives in an extended DOS partition).
Win98se FDISK or GDISK could format it as one FAT32 partition, but
then I couldn't use some DOS software that is "hardwired" for FAT16.
The PC does not have a CD-ROM, so I cannot install Win98se. I can run
the internal and external DOS commands from Win98se if I boot from a
Win98se boot disk.
I have tried several of the 46 predefined hard drive types. The only
two that have worked are type 0 and type 1.
I have searched on Google numerous times, but didn't find anything
helpful. Evidently, I have not used the right search terms. What
terms did you use?
The PC has a 1991 vintage multifunction card, which includes the
primary IDE connector. The hard drive ribbon cable is connected to
it. The EIDEMAX card is not connected to anything; it is simply
plugged into a 16-bit ISA slot. It is advertised to work in just this
way.
The person who sold me the card sent me a PDF of the owner's manual
for the EIDEMAX II. It mentions using the [F2] key to access a setup
menu when the PC is booting up. F2 does not work on the EIDEMAX. Is
there a comparable key for the EIDEMAX?
I looked at the upper memory footprint of the EIDEMAX, and it
indicates that the user can select Turbo, Fast, or Normal mode. Since
I do not have an owner's manual, I do not know how to access these, or
if there are any other selections that might be available if I knew
the correct keystroke during bootup.
