No, you shouldnt need to update to get the sound to work, although
Updating is certainly a good idea.

A good way to check is to go to the Device Manager and check if there
is an exclamation mark under your audio device.
If so, reinstalling the audio is probably your best bet, either
getting the specific driver for your device, or the generic driver
from windows.
