A Page file is an amount of space on the hard drive dedicated to memory swaps, in all reality if you do not have enough memory on your computer the hard drive will pick up the slack and use part of its space as memory. The hard drive is much much slower then memory, which is why when people upgrade their memory, their programs load faster, etc, since it is not storing memory related files on the hard drive.
