New Jersey was one of the first states to encourage its residents to switch from incandescent to fluorescent lighting by giving away fluorescent bulbs, then offering additional ones below cost. Any indication that New Jersey or other states will have incentives to switch to LEDs? $35 at C. Crane is prohibitive for a light bulb--I see they have one on sale for $15.

I've been working on LED lights for outdoors, using small solar panels with rechargeable batteries. They're fairly easy to make, especially since they're being used for viral graffiti and instructions are online. I haven't seen instructions for making wired LED lights for indoors yet, but expect to see that soon in Make Magazine.

The state of NJ changed over every traffic light under their control
to LEDs. As you suggested, the cost savings in power and not having
to constantly change bulbs paid for the conversion in a year. It was
one of the very few intelligent things the state has ever done.

As the cost of LED's comes down, we are going to see more and more
use of them, where it is appropriate.
