I have found that the bulbs made in the far east don't last nearly as
long as ones made in the USA, if you can find them any more. The bulbs
made in the Czech Republic are pretty good, too. I'd rather pay more for
quality products than get cheap junk and a cheap price.
We have one light bulb above a stairway landing. The ceiling is more
than 12 feet high at that point. In the 25 years we've lived in our
house, it's been replaced only once [thank goodness, since it requires
the extension ladder which is in the basement]. It's a 'made in USA' GE
bulb. When it finally burns out, I'll put in a compact fluorescent, or
move it someplace where I can reach it. The bulbs in our dining room
light that's on a dimmer regularly burns out after a few months. I'd use
a fluorescent bulb, but ones that work on dimmers are hard to find.
Stewart, are the lights in 'high hat' fixtures? Are they hanging, and
have metal reflectors? Those types of fixtures can get very hot and will
shorten bulb life if you don't provide enough air circulation to allow
cooling. I've drilled holes in similar fixtures to prolong bulb life.
Even fluorescent bulbs fail when the fixtures get too hot.

They bare the only lights that seem to suffer a faster than normal
failure rate.
They are on a timer and are on from 6PM till midnight (6 hours) per
night plus 2 hours per Sunday. 7x6 = 42 hours per week + 2 for
Sunday = 44 hours per week.
