I don't really care what the future of Apple is but the question of how closed an OS the Mac has might concern friends of Apple. It seems to me that one of the reason OS/2 died was that IBM priced the development tools so high there was no chance of (independent) developers writing for it (and I thought it was a great OS, bring Unix-like power to the desktop years before OSX and Linux) Apple resurgence has been credited (to some-extent, the non-iPod part) to its emphasis on software, so perhaps discouraging portability works to their favor.
