I am hardly pro-business or unconcerned about the environment but I think there are some good reasons
to doubt this theory, not least of which is that bee dissappearance
was first observed in the US and the apparently spread to Europe
which is the opposite of cell phone penetration patterns. The slashdot
discussion of this has some reasonable objections to this (as opposed
to the merely cranky). Still it could be true....

If the culprit is mobile phones, and it showed up in North America first, then could the frequencies used by the digital networks on Verizon and Sprint/Nextel be more injurious to bees than the GSM networks? Is this a problem in Australia, Korea and Japan where they also use CDMA?

Is the frequency used by WiFi phones less or more toxic to insects?

I suspect it's a combination of radiation, pesticides, GM foods, mites. The combination of many factors make the bees more vulnerable.

Do we use "too many" electronics that radiate energy? I see this as a challenge to first find out what's hurting the bees, and next to refine technology to be safer. I have chosen many ways to live comfortably and use less/safer energy while not depriving myself. Others can too, without moving out into the wilderness, or freezing/steaming in the dark in cities or suburbia.

Birds are missing too. Fewer warblers, towhees, buntings, kestrels, meadowlarks, quail, pheasants...

Betty
